Lady Justice, as an allegorical representation of the moral force of law, dates back to the reign of Roman Emperor Augustus and his institution of the cult of Justitia. She is typically associated with several symbols, including the sword and toga she wears on the monument to Queen Victoria where she represents one of the monarch’s six signal virtues. As the fourth of those virtues, she’s celebrated by the fourth issue in the East India Company’s Queen’s Virtues series, the 2022 Proof St. Helena Queen’s Virtues Justice 1 oz Silver Coin now available from Provident Metals.

Obverse

Engraver Jody Clark designed the effigy of Elizabeth II that dominates the coin’s obverse side and confirms it as legal tender. It’s joined by the inscriptions “QUEEN ELIZABETH II,” “ST. HELENA,” “ONE POUND,” and “2022.”

Reverse

Lady Justice bears a sword and is accompanied by a young squire on the coin’s reverse side. The rim inscription “FIAT JUSTITIA,” meaning “Let Justice Be Done,” completes the design.

History

Queen Victoria is one of the most iconic British monarchs in the history of the Crown, reigning for a record length of time over a period of major technological and social transformation. Her mark on the history of the British Empire and the rest of the world is commemorated by the Victoria Monument, her funerary monument that celebrated six related virtues that were held to have been at the core of her rule. The East India Company has celebrated each of these virtues in turn with its Queen’s Virtues series, with Justice being the fourth entry.
