Obverse

This is the right-profile portrait of Her Majesty created by Jody Clark and debuting widely on Australian coins in 2019. The Queen wears the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. Below her effigy, the sad aftermath of the Batavias sinking plays out as survivors struggle against each other to live.

Reverse

On the reverse of 2019 Australian Shipwreck Batavia Silver Coins is a nautical design border with Batavia sailing in the middle of the design. The inscriptions of the coins weight, purity, and metal content are upside down on this coin when you view the ship upright. Flip the coin to read the inscriptions and you will find the Batavia as it was when it met its fate, upside down on the bottom of the sea.

History

The Batavia was built in Amsterdam in 1628 for the Dutch East Indies Company. On its maiden voyage, the ship left Amsterdam for the Dutch East Indies colonial capital city of the same name, Batavia, in Indonesia. As it rounded the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa and stopped for supplies, a mutiny took place and the ship was rerouted with its cargo, crew, and passengers to Australia. It struck a reef off the coast of Western Australia and sunk. The mutineers battled amidst themselves during the aftermath with 110 men, women, and children dying.
