Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the obverse of all 2017 Australian Wedge Tail Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins. In this fifth-generation design for Australian coins, the 1998 image created by Ian Rank-Broadley shows the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara on her head.
Reverse
A powerful wedge tail eagle is shown in the reverse design of the 2017 Australian Wedge Tail Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin. This design depicts the eagle at rest on its perch with its wings folded at its side as it surveys the area around for threats or potential prey. This design, like all others in the series, was created by John Mercanti.
History
The Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coins debuted in 2014 with the design used again in 2015. The 2016 coin and these 2017 coins again shared a fresh new design, while subsequent releases have had their own distinctive designs. All images in the series have been created by John Mercanti, the former Chief Engraver of the United States Mint whose heraldic eagle design has featured on the American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin since 1986.
