Highlights:
The Kennedy Half Dollar debuted in 1964 at the US Mint. It was introduced just four months after President Kennedys assassination and replaced the existing Benjamin Franklin Half Dollar design.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 2014-W 50th Anniversary Kennedy Half Dollars is a depiction of President John F. Kennedy in left-profile relief. This portrait was fashioned by Gilroy Roberts, who, in 1964, was the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 1964-2014.
Reverse
Frank Gasparro, an Assistant Engraver at the US Mint, crafted a modified version of the Presidential Seal for the reverse design of the 2014-W Gold Half Dollar. The design is heavily inspired by the heraldic eagle. Inscriptions on this side read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, W, 3/4 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD, and HALF DOLLAR.
History
Kennedy’s presidency was marked by several international crises, including the Bay of Pigs invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the construction of the Berlin Wall. Kennedy’s leadership during these crises is widely praised, and his handling of the Cuban Missile Crisis is considered one of his greatest achievements.
