Many modern investors are familiar with the Somalia Elephant Silver Coin Series from the Bavarian State Mint, but not everyone is aware the collection was originally issued for Zambia as the Zambian Elephant Silver Series. The coins were issued with the same concept as an African Wildlife Series with the African bush elephant featured in the reverse design each year, but had a different nation of issue, face value, and obverse design. Today, you have the opportunity to get 2001 Zambian Elephant 1 oz Silver Coins online at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with an individual protective capsule!
  • 3rd coin released in the Zambian Elephant Series!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver in BU condition.
  • The face value of 5,000 Kwacha is backed by the Bank of Zambia.
  • On the obverse is the Zambian coat of arms.
  • The reverse features a mother elephant with its calf.

The African bush elephant has been the focal point of the reverse designs in the African Wildlife Series through both the Zambian issues and modern Somalia issues. The bush elephant is the largest of the three living elephant species and also holds the distinction as the largest, heaviest land mammal alive in the world today. The Bavarian State Mint uses a new image of the African bush elephant on the reverse every year dating back to the 1999 debut of the series.

Obverse

On the obverse face of the 2001 Zambian Elephant 1 oz Silver Coin, you will find the Zambian coat of arms depicted in the center of the design field. The national coat of arms features imagery that pays homage to Zambia, its geology, and its people. The real-life depiction of the shield features falling zig-zag lines of white and black representing Victoria Falls and its white water rushing over black rocks. The shield is supported by native Zambians on either side, and is topped by an eagle clutching a hoe and pickax representing the agricultural and mining sectors of Zambia.

Reverse

The reverse side of 2001 Zambian Elephant 1 oz Silver Coins includes an image of two African bush elephants. In this particular design, a mother is shown on the left extending its trunk to wrap it around the head and trunk of its young calf standing nearby. Inscriptions include African Wildlife, Elephant, and 1 oz Ag 999.

History

The African Wildlife Series Elephant coins were issued as the Zambian Elephant Silver Coins from 1999 to 2003. Beginning in 2004, the coins were reissued as the Somalia Elephant Silver Coins instead.
