Gold Coin Highlights

Obverse

The 1986 American Gold Eagle’s obverse features the famous Augustus Saint-Gaudens motif. Lady Liberty is shown stepping out from a rising sun while holding a torch in one hand. In her other hand, Lady Liberty is clutching an olive branch. The inscription “LIBERTY” sits within a ring of stars, and the year of issue can be found within the sun’s rays. The 1986 issue is one of the few dates in the American Gold Eagle series where the date is expressed in Roman Numerals.

Reverse

The reverse, created by US Mint designer Miley Busiek, shows a male Bald Eagle flying back to his nested family with an olive branch in his talon. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” are paired with the coin’s weight, purity, and denomination.

About the 1986 1 oz Gold Eagle NGC MS69

These 1986 Gold Eagles are especially desirable to collectors as the first year of issue. They are significant from both a historic and numismatic standpoint. Like all Gold Eagles from 1986 to 1991, these specimens display the date in Roman Numerals.

Gold Eagles from the 1980s are much harder to find than those issued in more recent years. In near-perfect MS69 condition, they become ever scarcer. After decades of moving from vault to vault, many early-date Gold Eagles show minor nicks and abrasions. In order for a coin to qualify as MS69, it must be virtually immaculate with no tolerance for major flaws or blemishes. The fact that these coins are in high grade–combined with the First Year of Issue status–makes them extremely collectible.
