1928 was a transitional year for the United States Silver Certificate. These paper notes had been in production in the United States with the backing of silver dollars held in Treasury vaults since 1878. While several denominations had been issued from 1878 to 1927 with the large-sized format, the 1928 redesign to small-sized formats resulted in the collection being trimmed down to a handful of small denominations. Right now, you can get 1928 $1 Silver Certificate Notes in Very Fine+ condition online from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with an individual plastic currency sleeve!
  • 1st issue of the small-sized US Silver Certificates!
  • Comes with six possible series versions!
  • Bears a face value of $1 (USD) fully backed by the American government.
  • On the obverse is President George Washington.
  • The reverse features the nation of issue and denomination of the bill.
  • Please keep in mind you may get notes with the same signature combinations when buying more than one.

With your purchase of the 1928 $1 Silver Certificate Note in this Provident Metals listing, you will receive a paper note that is in Very Fine+ condition. Paper notes in this condition still retain a crisp, overall clean appearance. However, you will notice common signs of wear and tear like rounded corners, mild soiling, and multiple fold lines.

The US released the 1928 Silver Certificate for six years, with six different signature combinations for the Treasurer of the United States and the Secretary of the Treasury on the obverse of the notes. Please keep in mind that the notes you receive may have the same signature combinations.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1928 $1 Silver Certificate Notes is an effigy of President George Washington. The first President of the United States of America, this portrait of President Washington is the one Americans are still familiar with on the $1 Federal Reserve Note. This design debuted in 1923 on the final series of large-sized notes. The design is flanked by important features such as the serial numbers and the Treasury seal. These are both printed in blue ink.

Reverse

The reverse of 1928 $1 Silver Certificates comes with a simple design of the nation of issue and the face value. The face value is noted in several different ways on this side of the note. The most notable is the ONE and One Dollar across the central field. Above this is The United States of America, with One Dollar noted below that twice. The four corners have a 1 printed, with the vertical edges bearing a One and 1.

History

The 1928 $1 Silver Certificate was issued in six series. This is noted on the obverse of the notes on the upper-left with a notation of Series of 1928. The different series are separated by the inclusion of A, B, C, D, and E after Series of 1928. Each one refers to a different combination of Treasurer and Secretary of the Treasury signatures.
